I first tried Old Dublin about twenty-five years ago. I smoked a few tins of it, then I stopped because it was really more expensive than I could afford. I smoke about a pound a month - a bit more lately...
Laudisi (sp?) discontinued it for a long time, but I was recently advised that they'd added it to their line-up once again. I thought I'd give it a try. As we speak (so to speak, lol), I'm smoking my first bowl. It's the same as I remember.
Understand. I absolutely cannot stand flavored Black Cavendish. It gives me a headache. Old Dublin has flavored Black Cavendish in it. I was hesitant to try it again after all these years.
This blend is VERY Latakia forward, but I've smoked a lot of heavy Latakia blends. Old Dublin lands on the tongue with all the smoky flavor you'd expect of a good Latakia, but but where most blends end, Old Dublin creates a rich smokey flavor, the depth of which expands the Latakia beyond itself. I can only assume it is the substantial amount of Oriental - yummy Oriental - that pairs it. It's heavenly. There is also just a hint of sweetness. I cannot taste even a hint of the flavored Black Cavendish, but they say it is there, and there is that subtle sweetness...
